Biskaja

Tällä plotterilla matkasimme aina Ijmuideniin asti jonne karttafirmamme toimitti unohtuneetn merikortin kanaain alueesta.

C-Maps Jeppesen kortit B & G navigaattoriin karttapöydällä.

In English

Thank's for the crew members of the first legs and especially to my daughter who managed to sail with me almost two and a half months.

We set the sails something like two weeks late 22.7.2015 towards Utö. The Westermost lighthouse of Finland.

My daugter was nervous when she noticed our maps of the Baltic Sea from the year 1926.

I said earlier to my crew that we will sail in the spirit of the Vikings to Portugal. With a compass and a log. I have to tell you that I had given to my First Mate a hand held navigator with maps to England. To ensure our trip.

With this old plotter we sailed up to Ijmuiden where we picked up the chart that was forgotten from our chart dealer. The Dutch coast to the English Channel.
A lot of the equipment we installed into it's places under our voyage.
Our up to date paper maps started from the Danish waters!

For our sailing trip we have large scale paper charts of the whole trip and detail maps only on important harbours and sailing areas. We have electronic Garmin Blue charts for the plotter in the cockpit and C-map Jeppesen charts for the B&G plotter in the chart table.

As for a curiosity I can point out that one oil rig in Dutch waters was missing in Garmin charts. Outside Portugese coast there where several stones and foul sailing areas marked false on these Garmin charts. These markings might belong to the fishing charts on the plotters menu, but, but... They are still radical mistakes on a sea chart. Once you loose the trust it's gone!

1. Legin pisin purjehdusosuus elikkä Itämeri. Itämeri seilattiin osittain transporttina, pysähdyimme kuitenkin Gotlannissa, Visbyssä, jossa meno oli mahtavaa. Rannalle oli rakennettu megadisco "Open dance floor, with cooling water spray canons".

1. The longest leg is Baltic Sea and we sailed it as a transport. We stopped in Gotland, Visby and a beautiful island of Christiansö in Denmark. A few Carlsberg beers and Röde Pölse in the harbor restaurants. Our Gourmet Cook brought with him a box of Carlsberg and a packet of Röde Pölse sausages with delicious mustard from the island.

58 Nm   3.8 - 4.8   /   1 vrk,

We spent the night in Rendsburg and also a night before Brunsbyttel locks. The lock broke down just before we entered in it. Early next morning the harbor authorities and the police forces entered the pier and checked the passports and boat papers. Our South American crew member passed the checkout.
The skipper confiscated the crew passports to the chart table locker.

Brunsbuttel - Cuxhafen - Lauersoog

158 Nm  5.8 - 7.8   /   2 vrk
Liikkelle klo 05.30 kohti Elbe I majakkalaivaa.

Cuxhafen was an idyllic town. I´we earlier passed Cuxhafen but this was a pleasant surprise.
A storm warning. Off we go, we are hoping to get somewhere behind the island Shiermonnikoog before the storm hits. We set the sails 05.30. towards Elbe 1 lighthouse.  There was some kind of a meeting of old tall ships in Baltic Sea because a pearl necklace of noble old ships passed us the whole morning.
We have just passed Juist island when noticing the lights of a huge wind power park that is not in our maps. We decide to pass it outside. When approaching Shiermonnikoog the wind arises near to 30 knots and the famous North Sea wave starts to build up. We wait for the first sun rays in the morning before entering through the sand banks. We have to call the harbor office to get new location of the entrance buoys. The sand banks here in North Holland are moving all the time.
We enter the Robbegatt Locks and our favorite harbor Lauersoog here in Friesland. Here I decide to call a motor mechanic to fix a problem of one of the diesel ejectors of our Volvo engine.
Off with the engine top. As an old businessman I said: We make the whole damn thing new.. So the part went to Volvo shop and was ready in four days. If you just repair one ejector, two obvious problems remain.
The storm raged the foe 4 days so It was a perfect time to do the motor service. Thanks to our old friend, Mr. Slagman the harbor captain in Lauersoog and the skilled mechanic Mr Harms.
We did not get a delicious fish meal at The Pierenend, but our Gourmet cook made us marvelous dinners.

190 Nm   14.8 - 19.8   /   5vrk,

The storm won´t let go. We decide to leave and we take the route through Isselmeer and Markemeer to Amsterdam and the channel to the North Sea. The wind rises to over 50 knots and the famous Flevo Race is cancelled on Saturday. Our crew gets a good praxis and a few contusions from the genoa sheets when reefing the sails. We also notice that the reefing system jams on reef nr 2. We sail to Ijmuiden harbor to get us a Garmin sea chart that was forgotten in Turku. Because we really need the new charts when entering the dutch sandbanks and the English channel.

Ijmuiden - Stellendam - ZeeBrygge

85 Nm   /   23.8 - 25.8   /  2 vrk,
laitteiden latauspaikalle saa alkaa jakaa vuoronumeroita.
Satoi koko vierailumme ajan kaatamalla.

A heavy wind gust follows us to a harbor in Holland. A small fishing harbor the last one before Belgium. We notice here in Stellendam that the generator is not charging. The ground cable has loosened from the generator when changing the engine top. The engine was started with a great thrill. The charging wakes alive, Yes! We have a spare generator but but this generator is special made and gives us 100 A instead of a 50 A original one. My modern crew with its constant need of charging laptops and telephones.. I can start to give queue numbers with the charging station in the chart table.

We sail to Zeebrugge where the local "Ficora, (VHF authorities)" guys come to check the VHF equipment and the licences. Always checking and protocols in Belgium, same thing every time?
All Ok and the skipper was not taken to jail. Royal yacht club was not at the level of today´s standards. Belgium did not give us the thrill that we expected. And we had pour rain all the time under our visit so...

ZeeBrugge - Dover

80 Nm   /   27.8 - 28.8   /   2 vrk,
Virtaukset hidastavat kunnolla matkan tekoa. Dover - Calais väliä menee tasaisena jonona laivoja, muutoin täällä on yllättävän hiljaista. Miehistö kuittaa Kapun hitaan vastavirtaosuuden ja saapuu ennätysajassa Doverin edustalle. Miehistö herättää Kapun vasta Doverin sataman suulla, housut kintuissa toteamaan koko kauheus, olemme sataman suuaukolla.

The tidal stream is affecting our progress. It is busy between Dover and Calais otherwise it is quite calm. No traffic at all? The crew makes a record speed in the last leg to Dover harbor and the skipper is getting a wake up in front of Dover entrance. Oh shit! we are sailing full speed in one of the entrances. A tack out and down with the sails. It is blowing again and the shallow water is making a huge sea in front of the entrance. We approach and a red light comes on. Yes yes, we turn ourselves round as polite sailors do. No ship is coming. So full ahead to the harbor. We did not call the port authorities so.. The red light maybe lit because of the high seas in front of the harbor entrance.
We visited South Foreland lighthouse. proud building and the place and the surrounding are marvelous with 100 m high white cliffs. Some pubs and fish and ships of course.

Dover - Cherbourg

154 Nm   /  31.8 - 2.9   /  3 vrk,
This is sailing! Cherbourgin  edustalle saavumme sumussa. Ensimmäinen delffiinihavainto.

We decided to sail direct to Cherbourg because we are late with the time table and the weather begins to show us the nice side. The wind veers to East and we ride with the waves. The weather is getting better for the first time after Denmark. This is sailing! We arrive to Cherbourg on a misty morning. There is also a Dolphin in front of the harbor.

Cherbourg - Brest

210 Nm   /  3.9 - 5.9   /  3vrk.
Cherbourg on ensimmäinen todella lämmin paikka. Syyskesän aurinko paistaa täydeltä terältä lämmittäen luumme. Fiilis on korkealla, löydämme kaupungista toreja, kauppoja ja erinomaisen 50 luvun kahvi/musiikki baarin missä Kapu ja Styyrmanni nauttivat yhden tumman Affigem oluen ja Pastis kahvit päälle.
Lähdemme yölla nousuveden aikaan liikkeelle, sisemmän aalllonmurtajan jälkeen on vaikeaa hahmottaa säkkipimeää ulosmenoränniä. Uloimmista aallonmurtajista pääsee kolmea kautta ulos merelle. Illan pimetessä Brestin laitiriin Quay de Eric Tabarlylle.

Our young crew member did not have a long time to survey the streets of Cherbourg. After having a rest in the afternoon sunshine the skipper and the first mate bunkered the boat and we set the sails during the night. It was hard to find the way out from the harbor basins towards the coal dark night. The harbour was big and with several entrances it is a little confusing. We wanted to get along because our Gourmet Cook and helmsman has to be in Brest in 4 days in order to take a TGV to Paris.
Downwind sailing continues and the crew starts to enjoy the sailing. We bought a detail map of the channel of Quesant in Cherbourg and that is where we are heading now. A heavy fog surrounds us in the morgnin and we wonder a bit to enter the channel, but suddenly the fog disappears and the channel is wide and calm. We have several knots of counter current but it is going good and the landscapes are marvelous in Goulet Du Brest. Here we have to sail a few miles without a sea chart. But I start to get along with my Garmin so no problem. We arrive to Brest when the night falls down on the Quay de Eric Tabarly.

Matkaa on kertynyt yhteensä 1642 merimailia.
Matkaa on taitettu Visbyn jälkeen. Kapun Katin ja Peran voimin. Kimmo joutui lahtemään Visbystä "kotiin". Kotimatka koitti jonkun mutkan kautta itäisemmässä euroopassa. Autopilotti ajanut yöllä jonkin verrran. Yleensä vahdissa yks ja toinen torkkuu kannella. Vapaavahti nukkumassa.

We have traveled 1.642 Sea miles.
We have been sailing with the skipper, Kati and Pertti. Kimmo had to go "home" from Visby. Returning home with round trip to east Europe.

Pera häipyy TGV:llä Pariisin suuntaan ja Kapu & Kati lähtevät tutustumaan autolla Cote D Armorin jylhään rannikkoon. Meidän kapteenioppilasta on vaikea saada pois hienoilta rannoilta.

Pera heads with TGV to Paris. The skipper and Kati take a ride with a car to the coast of Cote D Armor .
It is hard to get our young skipper student out from the perfect beaches. We get acquainted to the countryside of the Bretagne. Also some Eco projects . My old business friend Pascal and his wife Sophie serves us a delicious dinner in St Brieuc. We are remembering the good old times and both revere our good and long relationship.

The lack of crew scares me and I go and put an announcement to the board in the harbor office and also some internet pages. We are late and will not bother to get a crew from Finland.
Some busy service days with the boat. Radar dismounted and serviced with a new motor for the antenna.
E-pirb installation inside the cabin, later an automatic release box on deck. Also some other electronic problems solved.
Navtex and weatherfax has stopped working (our models are quite simple). I hear from other sailors that Navtex is sending. It´s just the bad quality of the equipment. I still have my old ICS Nav 4 mounted on chart table which I hear is working perfectly. I will change the antennas before heading to Canaries.

Brest - A Coruna  /  Biscay

340 Nm    /   24.9 - 27.9   /  3 vrk.
Jälleen klo 05.30 liikkeelle Goulet du Brestille. Nyt helppo ränni, ajamme styyrpuurin puoleista reunaa onhan meillä ranskalainen Xavier mukana antamassa neuvoja virtauksista. Myötävirtaa mennään koneella tyynessä salmessa. Aurinko pilvien takaa, aamu koittaa aamulla 07.30 St. Mathieun majakan kohdilla.
Kapteeni taipui miehistön ehdotuksiin kääntää vene sivumyötiksestä täysin vastatuuleen ja lähempänä sijaitsevan A Corunan satamaan Bayonan sijasta.

We sail again with the tide 05.30 to the black night of Gulet du Brest. This time the navigation is easy. We also have Xavier who knows the tides and tells us to follow the starboard side of the Gulet. The first sun rays through the clouds come 07.30 at St. Mathieu lighthouse. We take a course 250 degrees and we have about 50 Nm to the turning point. When approaching Raz du Sen there are many Marsopa Dolphins that we also photographed. We sail approx 6 knots with the side wind. After the turning point we take a direct course across the Biscay to Finisterre and Bayona.
We sail the whole Biscay in excellent weather and downwind conditions. We see some whales (Globiséphala malaena) during our passage. We have never seen these marvelous creatures. I can not believe N-NE wind the whole way. The tales are completely different.
When approaching Finisterre a wind of 30 knots starts to form an unpleasant wave. We have a few broaches due to ghusts and not flawless steering. The crew became afraid of the waves and the dark night. Me as the skipper make a decision to take down the main and reef the genoa for full . We change the course to clouse haul against the wind and start the engine in order to make to A Coruna harbour instaed of Bayona. A 45 Nm unpleasant headwind with tide wave. We will discuss this later with the crew...The whole night went when saltwater showers poured on to our necks.
A Coruna with the old Galichian dialect is a fine town. The distinguished sailing club was fine and the whole crew comfort themselves with delicious breakfasts and some cold beers.
The sights over the bay to the old town where great.

Finisterrren kärjen tuntuvilla pääsimme nostamaan purjeet ja ihailemaan Galichian jylhää rantaviivaa. Mahtava rannikko, mitä tämä olisikaan länsi myrskyllä. Nyt pääsemme ihailemaan sitä 5 mailin etäisyydeltä. Lisää Delfiinejä ilmaantuu heti aamulla veneemme ympärille leikkimään. Katselemme satamaa jossain ennen Finisterren kärkeä, että pääsemme satamaan yöksi. Sellainen löytyy Ensenada De Corme:n lahdelta. varovaisesti saa ajaa sisään. Aamu paljasti kivikot Laxen kalastajasataman sisäänajon molemmilta puolilta. Ränni on kyllä erittäinkin leveä. Kaunis mesta. Kävimme pikaisesti tutustumassa  kaupunkiin, vuorotellen koska purtemme on vuorovesilaiturissa kalastusalusten vieressä. Illalla Xavier opastaa Kapulle vuoroveden korkeuden laskemisen sataman ilmoitetusta arvosta ylöspäin.

The wind is now NW and favourable for us when sailing down the Spanish and Portugese coast. First the same 45 Nm to the peak of Finisterre, this time back 45 Nm again headwind but now we have the tide and the sunshine with us. Galichia is magnificent. More Dolphins come again early in the morning. We look for a harbour near Finisterre and find a harbour in Ensenada de Corme. It is advisable to enter carefully between the reefs on every small port here on the coast facing directly to the Atlantic. The early morning reveals the reefs when leaving the harbor. Xavier teaches the skipper in the night how to do the calculations of tidal heights above the minimum depth chart markings. We are tied tonight alongside the fishing pier and going up and down nearly 5 meters.

Bayona - Nazare

150 Nm   /   1.10 - 2.10   /   2vrk.
Portugalin rantaviivaa etelään, lähes kokonaan koneella ajoa yli 30 tuntia tyynessä. Swelli keinutteli mukavasti venettä (3 - 5m). Jätämme Porton ja muutaman muun mielenkiintoisen sataman väliin tällä reissulla, sääli olisin mielelläni käynyt Douro joen suistossa ja tutustumassa muutamaan Portviini Cave´n.
Kalastusvälineitä ja veneitä saakin sitten väistellä urakalla. Yöksi siirryimme yli 10 Nm päähän rannikosta että verkkoja olisi vähemmän. Oikeaoppisesti pitäisi varmasti ajaa vähintään 15 Nm päässä ranikosta jotta välttyisi kalaverkoilta ja rysiltä. Kalastajat ajavat täysin huviveneistä piittaamatta niinkuin saamme kuulla seuraavassa satamassa, jossa oli vene johon oli törmätty. 15 Nm päässä rannikosta purjehtivat  taas sitten rannikkorahtialukset.

We sail Southwards with the engine along the Spanish and Portugese coasts. The swell is 3-5 m. We are leaving Porto and the river Douro to next time. What a pity I would have liked to visit some of the Cave´s of fine Port.
Sailing under night is challenging because of the vast amount of fishing gear. We move 10 Nm from the coast during nights. I think 15 Nm might be better  but there are the coastal freighters. The fishing boats drive completely their own routes and you have to sail slalom with the boats and the fishing gear.
Sailing into the town Nazare´ is something great. You take a course right into the lighthouse and pick up the line leading direct between the breakers. A strange thunder from a distance wakes us when approaching. It is the noise of the waves breaking to the beach. Atlantic ocean has a narrow tongue into the land just here and it brings big swell and breaking waves near the lighthouse. Surfers around the world are here waiting for the big wave. The photographers also to catch a perfect shot.

Vene telakoitiin hyvin 6.10.2014. Kaikki irtotavara pestiin ja kuivattiin huolellisesti ennen luukkujen sulkemista.
Kuulin Nazare:n venetelakasta S/y DOM veneeltä Visbyssä sekä yhdeltä suomalaisveneeltä Brestissä.

We have traveled 2.257 Sea miles.

We fix the boat with Kati and Xavier. We say thank´s once more to our legger, The First Mate Xavier! We enjoy once more of the views and the beaches of Nazare´. The boat was docked 6.10.2014.
All loose gear was washed and dried and hoisted inside before closing the gateway hatch.
I heard of Nazare´ from one finish yacht, S/y DOM in Visby and from another finish sailor Hannu with his Bavaria 37 in Brest.

Seilausterveisin!

Nyt suunnittelemaan seuraavia legejä, muutama miehistöehdokas on jo ilmoittautunut halukkuutensa purjehduksiin. Jos onni suosii siirrän veneen lähemmäs Afrikan rantoja jo Joulukuussa 2014. Mikäli talvimyrskyt estävät tämän lähdemme maalis -huhtikuun aikana  etelään Sagresin kautta tai suoraan Afrikan rantaa pitkin Kanarialle ja sieltä KapVerdelle.

Hio hoi sailors!

We start to plan the next legs. Some crew members are already booked and some have said they´re interested of the Atlantic ocean.
If all is well I will move the boat nearer to the African coast already on X-Mas time. If the weather is impossible we start sailing march - April towards the Africa and Canaries and Cap Verde Islands.
