Live aboard S/y Naneux and around in Europe

Here some photographs of us and our routines aboard Atlantic Navigator

Under a little over one years period we have been sailing in two to three months legs through Europe from the cold latitudes of the Vikings to the warm Atlantic islands of Macaronesia.

We are a small crew of Finns, two old Sea Dogs, Pertti and me (the skipper), our younger First Mate Kimmo from southern Finland. Also my daughter Kati from Tierra Del Fuego, Ushuaia. We had also a genuine Breton Skipper, Xavier from Brest guiding us through the Bay of Biscay.

Our daily routines aboard, working on deck, maneuvering with sails, throwing bates to the fishes, working with the laundry and sunbathing. The latter happened mostly after English Channel when the weather improved. Low pressures followed us in the Baltic Sea and North Sea. We had a few storm force winds in Dutch waters. Our crew learned how to reef sails on winds exceeding fifty knots.

My daughter learned to navigate only with compass, log and sea chart. We navigated like this all the way from Stormälö to Kiel. Our first mate Xavier learned Kati to use compass bearings and putting the bearings on a sea chart on the old fashioned way in harsh waters of Finisterre.

Our chef Pertti kept the meat loving crew satisfied with delicious dinners, Kati on the contrary made
good breakfasts with healthy grains. We enjoyed local meals whenever possible in pier restaurants or nice down town cafe´s. We took long walks in the mountains and dinnered in the ranches with game cooked for us. Fish was hard to get, We made a superb dinner of a fresh Bonito in Arrifana bay. Tuna we got fresh in market places in the islands of Atlantic Ocean.

One big difference to the good old days was modern communication systems and social media. Everybody needed to be connected all the time. The chart table needed extra plugs for all the tabs and phones of the crew.

We saw nice boats and huge ships on our route. One wooden Colin Archer in Nazaré, the owner was in a caring home and the boat needs a new owner. In Porto Santo there was a damaged Finnish boat from Parainen, Maestro 36. We altered twice our course to avoid collision near Canary Islands. AIS was of great help in seeing the ships on grey mornig hours.

The skipper built and connected electronics a lot during the first etaps of the sailing trip. We all had our tasks, Kati making good bread for our breakfasts, Pertti The Chef tried to find bates and catch fish on every sea we sailed. The skipper engaged a lot time to make the boat even better. We all spent a lot of time in the nature around us, also a lot interesting cities were seen and mountains and ancient cities were conquered. We liked most the stunning Galichian coast line.
